SYNOPSIS:

Mexico at the turn of the century. A young Xochil Indian girl fell desperately in love with a man of Spanish lineage, and the great Zochil river has never forgiven her. Twenty years later she is married, and now the river will take its revenge upon her.  Her husband will betray her, she will go mad, and the river will torment her until she sacrifices her only child, Sara. She will forever weep. This is the legend of La Llorona - the Weeping Woman. She lives in a perpetual purgatory, and each time someone calls out her name, she is forced to re-live her tragedy once again.

CHARACTERS:

NAME: Maria/Sichwa (dramatic mezzo soprano)

AGE RANGE:

Maria is La Llorona, of the musical's title. She is the devoted wife of Antonio, the last of her kind (Xochil Indian), and strong willed.

early 30s

NAME: Antonio (tenor)

AGE RANGE:

Proud, Spanish hacendado landowner, unhappily married to Maria.

late 40s

NAME: Sara (full lyric soprano)

AGE RANGE:

Adventurous, a bit rebellious, only daughter of Maria and Antonio.

late teens

NAME: General Rafael (low baritone)

AGE RANGE:

Spanish descendant of the first conquistadores, arrogant and racist.

early 60s

NAME: Carmela (lyric soprano)

AGE RANGE:

Beautiful, manipulative, sly daughter of General Rafael. She has an affair with Antonio.

early 20's
